KASL ADVOCACY
TEN COMMANDMENTS OF ADVOCACY

I. THOU SHALT BE HONEST
Always, even when it does not necessarily support your point of view
Be ready to explain circumstance

II. THOU SHALT BE COURTEOUS
Offer to help
If you disagree with a point of view, explain the consequences of the action being considered
Don't threaten

III. THOU SHALT COMMUNICATE/COMMUNICATE/COMMUNICATE
Respond quickly to requests for information
Provide straight information; do your homework and know what the opposition is doing
Visit early with people, bring a list of your issues with INFORMATION on it
Prepare a 1-page fact sheet related to your issues

IV. THOU SHALL NOT BERATE OR CRITICIZE OTHER INDIVIDUALS
Concentrate on gaining informed support from the person
with whom you are meeting

V. THOU SHALT BE IMPORTANT TO DECISION MAKERS
Become known as the EXPERT on library services and education
Become the one they call when they need information
Relate with staff also; they can be very helpful

VI. THOU SHALT BE SWIFT
Be bright/be brief/be gone!

VII. THOU SHALT BE UNDERSTANDING
Know individual's background/culture/politics
Patience is a virtue!
Be prepared and able to compromise

VIII. THOU SHALT OFFER ASSISTANCE/BUILD COALITIONS
Be willing to work on overlapping areas of interest

IX. THOU SHALT BE A CHEERLEADER
Thank you letters are essential
Even after a questionable decision, let individuals know that you appreciate their spending time with you

X. THOU SHALT ALWAYS DISPLAY PROFESSIONALISM
Don't be "uppity", be confident
Skip the library jargon
Maintain a sense of humor
